Why UK Businesses Are Rethinking Promotional Merchandise in 2026

Why UK Businesses Are Rethinking Promotional Merchandise in 2026

  • By Rakshana Nisba

Branded giveaways have been a staple of corporate marketing for decades, yet the items filling conference tote bags and exhibition halls are changing fast.

Cheap plastic pens and single-use lanyards no longer cut it for companies that want their brand associated with responsibility.

Across the UK, procurement teams are actively seeking alternatives that reflect environmental commitments without sacrificing visibility.

This shift is not driven by idealism alone. Clients, employees and event attendees increasingly notice what a company hands out, and a flimsy plastic gadget can quietly erode trust that took years to build.

Sustainability is on the Agenda

For businesses listed on directories and trade platforms, the promotional items they distribute at networking events often serve as a first physical impression.

One product category that has grown noticeably is sustainable tote bags, made from organic cotton, recycled PET or Fairtrade-certified fabric.

Barneveld-based supplier Greengiving.eu, which has served corporate buyers across Europe since 2009, reports that reusable bags consistently rank among its most ordered items.

The appeal is straightforward: a well-made cotton bag gets reused dozens of times, keeping a logo visible far longer than a disposable item ever could.

What Changed in Corporate Procurement

Several forces converged to push sustainable promotional products from niche to norm. The UK’s Environment Act 2021 set a broader regulatory tone, and businesses have since tightened their own supply chain standards in response. Procurement policies at many mid-sized and large firms now include sustainability criteria that extend to marketing materials and branded merchandise.

At the same time, employees have started to voice preferences. Internal surveys at companies across sectors reveal that staff are more likely to actually use a branded item if it aligns with values they care about. A recycled-paper notebook or a bamboo pen gets kept. A plastic trinket ends up in a drawer or, worse, a bin.

Beyond the Bag: Categories Worth Considering

Sustainable tote bags remain popular, but the range of eco-friendly promotional merchandise has expanded considerably. Seed paper is one example: cards or bookmarks embedded with wildflower seeds that can be planted after use. Reusable drinkware from brands like Dopper and Retulp offers another practical option that recipients tend to keep for months or even years.

Growable gifts, such as plant kits and flower bulb sets, have carved out a niche for letterbox-friendly corporate gifting. These work particularly well for remote teams and client thank-you gestures, where physical events are not involved. Notebooks from erasable or stone-paper brands add a functional twist that sparks conversation, which is ultimately the point of any promotional item.

The key question for any buyer is whether the product will genuinely be used. A sustainable tote bag made from GOTS-certified organic cotton, for instance, serves a daily purpose and carries a logo into supermarkets, gyms and offices. That repeated exposure is difficult to replicate with digital advertising alone.

Choosing a Supplier That Fits

Not every supplier in this space operates the same way. Some focus on minimum orders of several thousand units, while others cater to smaller batches suited to SMEs. Turnaround times vary too. Greengiving.eu, for example, offers quotes within one working day and ships free within the EU, which can matter when event deadlines are tight. Their customer rating sits at 9.3 out of 10 based on more than 3,300 reviews, and they hold an EcoVadis medal for sustainability performance.

For UK businesses sourcing from EU-based suppliers, it is worth factoring in post-Brexit customs arrangements. Many European suppliers have adapted their logistics to handle cross-border shipments smoothly, but delivery windows may differ from domestic orders. Asking about landed costs upfront avoids surprises later.

Making Promotional Items Part of a Wider Strategy

A sustainable giveaway works best when it connects to a broader brand story. Handing out eco-friendly cotton bags at a trade fair means more if the company can point to other environmental initiatives it supports. Without that context, even the greenest product risks feeling like a token gesture.

Reference clients in this space include names such as McKinsey and L’Oreal, organisations that treat promotional merchandise as an extension of corporate social responsibility rather than a standalone marketing expense. That integration is where the real value lies for companies competing in crowded UK markets.

The conversation around branded merchandise has moved well past novelty mugs and foam stress balls. For businesses reviewing their promotional spend in 2026, the practical question is no longer whether to go sustainable but how to do it without overpaying or sacrificing quality.
