New Online Resource aims to cut through IR35 Confusion
A new website dedicated entirely to IR35 has launched to help contractors, businesses and advisers better understand the legislation and the off-payroll working rules.
IR35 Update has been created as an independent reference site covering IR35 news, case law and practical guidance.
Although IR35 has been part of the UK tax system for more than 25 years, it remains one of the most debated areas of contractor taxation. Tribunal decisions continue to shape how the rules are interpreted, while government policy and HMRC guidance have changed significantly over the years.
Built around IR35
Many websites discuss IR35 alongside wider tax and accountancy topics. IR35 Update takes a different approach by focusing solely on the legislation.
The website includes guides explaining key concepts such as control, substitution, mutuality of obligation, the small company exemption and HMRC’s Check Employment Status for Tax (CEST) tool.
It also contains an extensive IR35 calculator, plus a growing archive of employment status and IR35 tribunal decisions, ranging from early employment status cases through to recent judgments.
David Townsend, tax specialist at IR35 Update, said:
“IR35 has never stood still. The legislation has been influenced by tribunal decisions, changes in government policy and evolving HMRC guidance. That can make it difficult for contractors and businesses to keep up.”
“Our aim is to provide a reliable source of information that explains the rules in plain English, while giving readers access to the cases and developments behind them.”
Landmark cases in one place

IR35 Update includes summaries of many of the cases that continue to influence employment status decisions today.
These range from established employment status authorities, such as Ready Mixed Concrete and Hall v Lorimer, through to more recent IR35 decisions involving broadcasters, consultants and other contractors.
Each article explains the background to the case, the tribunal’s decision and why it remains relevant.
News and practical guidance
Alongside its reference material, the website publishes news covering tribunal decisions, government announcements, HMRC activity and wider developments affecting contractors.
Townsend said:
“IR35 is regularly back in the headlines. New cases are decided; government policy changes and businesses continue to make employment status decisions every day. We wanted to create a resource that reflects those ongoing developments.”
Independent information resource
The IR35 Update has been developed for contractors, recruitment agencies, hiring organisations, accountants, and advisers seeking factual information about the legislation.
Rather than promoting financial products or contractor services, the website focuses on explaining how the rules work in practice and what the latest developments mean.
New guides, case summaries, and news articles are added regularly as the legislation and case law continue to develop.
